In the early hours of the morning on August 20, 2024, Arthur Hatchard, beloved husband of Jan Hatchard, left this world for a better place at the age of 77. A surprise diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer, combined with a massive stroke, ended his life within 10 short days. He passed away at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, VA, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia, Art also enjoyed life in West Chester, PA, and Martha’s Vineyard, MA, before retiring to Richmond in 2019. He is survived by his wife Jan and their six children: Alisa Stewart (Tony), Josh Mitchell (Dawn), Lisa Dougherty (Shannon), Diane Wernert, Alex Verno (Sarah), and Amelia Hatchard (Marcos Hernandez). He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Ben, Tyler, Lola, Scarlett, Caitlyn, Brooklyn, Zoey, and Atticus; his sister Patricia Moore (Bill) and brother George Hatchard (Mary); his cherished in-laws; and his much-loved nieces and nephews, whose beautiful families and countless adventures delighted him. Art’s treasured dog and cat, Finn and Vada, will also deeply miss him.
In his successful career in construction management and design/build construction, Art built everything from skyscrapers to mansions, churches to shops, and even new barns at the Devon Horse Show. He could bring to life anything anyone dreamed up. One of the proudest 18 months of his career was spent working with Habitat for Humanity in Coatesville, PA, where he built affordable housing and helped families settle into their new homes. But Art did more than just build houses—he built neighborhoods full of people who cared for and supported one another in meaningful ways.
In his personal life, Jan often referred to him as the “Long-Suffering Art Hatchard,” as he willingly participated in every fundraising idea she ever conceived. From serving as the Facilities Manager for the Chester County Flower Show to his ambassadorship for the Possible Dreams Auction on Martha’s Vineyard, and everything in between, Art fully supported and believed in the causes they benefited. He never said no—not once.
Art was a beautiful, deeply caring, and loving teddy bear of a man. He took great pride in his decision to donate his body through MedCure, hoping to help others. His choice has already inspired others to follow in his footsteps.
