Referring Hospice and Terminal Patients
Assisting Patients and Families Through the Donation Process
Patients facing a terminal illness often turn to their medical professionals for guidance with critical end-of-life decisions, including choosing final arrangements. As interest in body donation grows as an alternative to traditional burial or cremation, having the resources to counsel patients on the body donation process offers an invaluable way to support informed choices and honor their wishes.

No Cost To Be A MedCure Donor
Once a candidate is accepted for body donation at the time of passing, MedCure covers all expenses related to the donation process. This comprehensive coverage includes transportation, cremation, one certified copy of the death certificate, and the choice of either returning cremated remains directly to the family—typically within about five months—or placing them in a respectful ossuary.

“When my patient passed away her body donation went very smoothly. Her wishes were carried out by MedCure when other programs told her no. Thank you so much for all you do.”

Pre-Screening For Hospice Patients
MedCure provides a pre-screening program designed for patients in hospice care or with a life expectancy of six months or less. While completing the eligibility screening in advance isn’t required, it can make the process smoother and less stressful for families at the time of passing. To assist you, download our Hospice Patient Registry Kit, which offers clear guidance through each step of the body donation process.
Time Of Passing Procedure
1. Contact MedCure
MedCure should be called immediately at the time of the donor’s passing. We have Donation Coordinators available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist donor families.
2. Verify Donor Eligibility
A Donation Coordinator will ask screening questions and gather time of passing information to determine final acceptance. If the pre-screening was already completed, we will confirm any changes to their screening information.
3. Submit Donation Consent Forms
Completed documentation should be submitted within 24 hours of the donors passing and can be emailed to donate@medcure.org or faxed to 503-257-9101.
4. Transportation
MedCure will contact a local funeral home to assist in bringing the donor into our care. To ensure MedCure covers transportation expenses, family members are encouraged to not contact a funeral home themselves.
